Eyeliner...?
Yes, even I am confused by eyeliner. My first eyeliner I bought was when I was with an older friend who had already started wearing makeup. Needless to say I am fair skinned and blonde and her black eyeliner looked a little funky on me. So, I started the hunt for eyeliner. I found a $16 eyeliner that I saved my money for- I was only ten and my Mom to this day is not a fan of children wearing makeup- but once I bought it and used it, I found love. I still have it today, because for about a 2 year period I lost it, then found it, then lost it, then found it. Until once I found it I organized my makeup PROPERLY. This pencil eyeliner, Talika Paris in Brown, is creamy and amazing. But only recently I have ventured into other eyeliner formulations. I find that girls my age and younger don't know a lot about makeup and need some tips. My insight to makeup came courtesy of the makeup community on youtube.com (e.g. Juicystar07, Allthatglitters21, MichellePhan, KandeeJohnson, and many many more). But here I am today either informing you, or boring you, about eyeliner.
From what I've concurred, eyeliner comes in 5 main formulations:
- Pencil/Crayon
- Cream
- Gel
- Liquid
- Powder (water activated)
Pencil is your standard eyeliner, it looks like a pencil, feels like a pencil, you even sharpen it! this formulation- I find- is best for your waterline. If your going for a natural look I suggest brown, if you want to make your eyes wider I suggest white. I personally like putting on brown then a nice coat of white over it. Overall pencil will most likely be the cheapest of all formulations- but of course it depends when you buy it and who you buy it from.
Cream is so far my favorite formulation. I use the Smashbox cream eyeliner in caviar (a rich black) and I use it mainly on my top lash line and apply it using a thin liner brush- these can be purchased at art supply stores. I find it lasts long and gives a beautiful matte finish. I find it super easy to apply and I really like how the finished product looks. Though it can get a little expensive, I find it to be worth the money in the end, plus (for me) it lasts a while!
I am yet to use gel liner, so I will provide you with what I have researched about it. It is basically very precise and from what I have seem gives off a glossy finish. You apply it with an eyeliner brush because of the fact that it comes in a pot! The most common gel eyeliner's I have seen used are the Bobbi Brown Gel Liners, and MAC Fluid Line.
Liquid Liner is the most troublesome for me- maybe I just shake when I use it- but I ALWAYS seem to smudge or ruin it. I used liquid before I switched to cream and to this day I find it:
A) Harder to use
B) Messy
and C) Overall not so amazing liner
Whenever I use it it comes looking like I took a Crayola marker and tried to apply it as liner! It looks like a tattooed black line, almost cheap. I found it very wet and very easy to screw up! Maybe it was just the liner I was using, not mentioning any product names, but I am yet to experience an amazing liquid eyeliner.
Powder eyeliner is usually advertised as "Mineral Eyeliner" because you receive it in a tin like mineral foundation. It literally is a powder, just darkened. Powder eyeliner can also be pressed like an eyeshadow and be water activated (aka you wet your brush then dip it in the liner). I can give no review of it because I myself have not heard anyone talk about it or even use it in a tutorial. But I can tell you how it works- you dip your brush in water and swirl it around in the eyeliner. The water will hold on to the color therefor making some kind of eyeliner.
I hope that anybody who reads this comes out with more insight to the complicated world that is makeup, because I am also yet to steer my way through. But here are some girls who have:

Elle- http://www.youtube.com/user/AllThatGlitters21
Kandee- http://www.youtube.com/user/kandeejohnson
These girls have provided millions (literally) of girls, and guys, with insight to the makeup world. But be warned, once you start to explore the youtube community you get sucked in! Mwah hahaha! Just kidding- but they do get addicting!!
Talk to you gals later!
